Korean Tourist Arrested for Vandalizing Bali's Historic Temple

AMLAPURA, NusaBali.com - Again, the tourism scene in Bali is drawn into tourists' rebellious acts. This time, a Korean tourist is caught red-handed vandalizing one of the historic temples in the eastern Bali region, Karangasem.
Ms. YN was arrested by the police on Monday (7/8/2023) after villagers in Besakih, Rendang sub-district, saw her sitting still and watching on demolished parts of the Goa Raja Temple's praying amenity.
Goa Raja is considered a historic temple. It is situated not far from Besakih Mother Temple.
According to Balinese mythology, the cave temple is related to the legend of Bali strait formation or the separation of Bali island from the land of Java.
It is believed that a priest named Dang Hyang Sidimantra has cut the island of Java to lock up his gambler son, Dang Hyang Manik Angkeran, on the newfound island of Bali.
The temple is also believed for the palace of a supernatural dragon named Naga Bhasuki. Now, it functions as a temple to worship the god of wealth, considering Naga Bhasuki also grants gold from its fallen scales.
For its significance, vandalism on the cave temple or any temple on the tourist island is highly offensive. However, YN comes up with an eccentric reason to justify her action.
Before vandalizing the temple's amenity, she believed to follow 'an occult whisper' that told her to visit Goa Raja Temple, according to her early confession to the local police.
Chief of The Rendang Police, Made Suadnyana, told the media that YN was still under interrogation. "It takes time to unfold her motives and the events. We are working on her statements," he said on Tuesday (8/8/2023).
Suadnyana added, on the report of the Besakih villagers, that the events took place at dusk. No one knew how YN got inside the cave temple and demolished its praying amenity.
Meanwhile, the case is now going viral. Balinese netters storm social media on this hot topic. They lambast that this case makes them deja vu.
Previously, tourists with such actions silently demanded 'free tickets to go home' from the Bali Immigration office.
"It rings a bell. At the end of the day, she'll confess that she's stressed, depressed, and broke. She did it on purpose to get deported. Let her do community service first," a comment from @gunadhi3 on Instagram.
Some others suspect that she may be under the influence during the events. Netters suggest the police put her on trial rather than send her home free as they call it a blasphemy.
