Christmas Eve Mass in Canggu Reflects Balinese Culture
MANGUPURA, NusaBali.com – The Catholic community in Canggu celebrated Christmas Eve Mass at the Holy Spirit Parish Church, Babakan Village, Badung, Bali, on Tuesday evening (24/12/2024). The service, led by Father Rony Alfridus Bere Lelo, was a unique blend of faith and Balinese cultural heritage.
During the Mass, most of the congregation wore traditional Balinese attire, including kebaya and udeng (Balinese headgear), symbolizing the harmony of religion and local traditions. This cultural integration is a hallmark of the parish, which seeks to preserve and promote Balinese culture while celebrating Christian faith.

The church, designed with Balinese architectural elements, provided a sacred and culturally rich atmosphere for the celebration. In addition to local parishioners, the service was also attended by several international tourists who joined in the solemn Christmas Eve prayers.
One of the attendees, Made Suartini, shared her pride in celebrating Christmas in traditional Balinese dress. “It’s a beautiful way to show that our faith and culture can coexist harmoniously,” she said.
Meanwhile, a foreign tourist, Sarah White from Australia, expressed her admiration for the unique cultural touch in the Christmas celebration. “This is my first time experiencing such a beautiful blend of culture and faith. It’s truly unforgettable,” she remarked.
The Holy Spirit Parish Church in Babakan is known for its commitment to cultural preservation, regularly encouraging parishioners to wear traditional Balinese clothing during special occasions. This practice not only honors local customs but also highlights Bali’s rich cultural identity to the world.
