The Indonesian government focuses on developing and strengthening vocational education to produce skilled and qualified workforce.
JAKARTA, NusaBali
"Indonesia with the 4th largest population in the world with a relatively young population structure, seeks to benefit by improving the quality of skilled workers through education," said Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud), Muhadjir Effendy in a press release in Jakarta on Thursday (1/11).
Effendy said that at the ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting or the Southeast Asian Minister of Education Meeting (ASED) at Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. In the face of the industrial revolution, where nothing digital has become an inseparable part of business and industry, it is important for Indonesia.
That is, especially high school graduates to be able to enter the increasingly competitive world of work and vary according to the dynamic development of the times. "The increased supply of skilled labour with qualifications and competencies at the ASEAN level will definitely determine the design of development and bring vocational education to a better direction, at the secondary and higher education levels," he said.
Effendy also revealed that at present Indonesia's strategy in preparing skilled workers from vocational high school (SMK) graduates was shifting to industrial needs.
Thus, the preparation of the curriculum and the role of industry as potential users, was increasingly improved. It applied both at the national, regional and international levels. He expected SMK graduates to be more prepared to face the professional world in the era of labour market openness and the fourth industrial revolution.
"Because of that, the 60 percent curriculum is determined by the business field. Then the teaching and learning process is also more in practice in the business and in the industrial area," he said. The education system currently implemented in Indonesia, according to Minister of Education and Culture Effendy, is in accordance with the ASEAN Work Plan on Education 2016-2020, where vocational education is included.
He said that currently the average ASEAN country had developed vocational education. He revealed that Myanmar and Thailand were interested in increasing education cooperation with Indonesia.
"Because they judge what Indonesia is doing can also be adopted and applied in their country," Effendy said. The ASED event had become an opportunity for the education ministers of ASEAN countries to exchange experiences about education systems and programs being implemented in their respective countries. *ant *ph
