DENPASAR, NusaBali.com – The Bali Ministry of Law and Human Rights is committed to advancing the rights of female inmates in correctional facilities across Bali, including foreigners, through initiatives aimed at improving conditions during their incarceration.
A key strategy to address overcrowding at Kerobokan Women’s Prison is the planned relocation of the facility to Antap Village, Tabanan Regency.
Pramella Yunidar Pasaribu, Head of the Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, expressed optimism that the new facility will enhance service capacity and provide more suitable space for female inmates.
“The relocation of Kerobokan Women’s Prison is one of our efforts to offer better services for female inmates. A larger, more adequate facility will allow us to implement more effective rehabilitation programs,” said Pramella on Wednesday (13/11/2024).
Pramella highlighted the importance of a specialized approach to supporting female inmates, especially pregnant and nursing mothers, acknowledging their unique physical and psychological needs. To ensure effective delivery of women’s rights programs, the Bali Ministry of Law and Human Rights has partnered with the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPPA) and the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) for additional support and guidance.
Beyond meeting basic rights, the ministry has introduced a flagship program known as Sekolah Merdeka Jegeg, offering female inmates access to alternative education programs, including primary, middle, and high school equivalency courses. In partnership with Satya Darma Singaraja School of Economics, the ministry also provides opportunities for female inmates to pursue higher education up to the bachelor’s degree level.
Pramella emphasized that these efforts are designed to ensure the rehabilitation process does not sever inmates' roles as mothers and community members. She called on all stakeholders to work together to create a more humane correctional environment that supports social reintegration for female inmates.
“We are committed to providing the best service for female inmates, ensuring they have the opportunity to improve themselves and reintegrate into society with better skills and readiness,” Pramella affirmed. *ris
